BEST 2012 – Warp XX

2012 Warp XX Teaser Video

2012 BEST Game Specific Rules – Warp XX

The Space Elevator: Hours before your Cargo Ship arrives at an equatorial island in the Pacific Ocean, you can see a thin, bright, vertical line bisecting the sky. As the ship draws closer, you see that the base of the line terminates at a large building that occupies much of the island. Your gaze follows the bright line from the building upward, but you cannot see its far end. The line is a ribbon of super-strong carbon nanotube grown around an unobtainium monocrystalline structure, and it stretches from this equatorial island up to the anchor asteroid in geosynchronous orbit 62,000 miles above you. Often hailed as the eighth wonder of the modern world, the Space Elevator is the premiere low-cost solution for lifting cargo out of Earth’s gravity well. It will expand lunar colonization, exobiological exploration, and asteroid mining. It has already spawned many new industries, and competition for SE contracts is fierce. The first stop on the Space Elevator is Midway Station, located just above the atmosphere, but well below geosynchronous orbit. Midway Station is a cargo transfer depot, solar power station, and a home away from home for the Space Elevator supervising engineers. The Space Elevator program needs unmanned robotic vehicles for routine cargo delivery, as well as additional Station expansion and construction. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has published a request for proposal (RFP) for the production of efficient robotic lifting vehicles for the Space Elevator program. Your job is to respond to the DARPA RFP with a Technical Design development and process document (Engineering Notebook) and prototype Technical Demonstration system (Robot). Your document and prototype system will compete with other purveyors’ entries in a “fly-off” occurring six weeks from today to support a Milestone B decision. This event (Game day) will include a technical evaluation of the engineering designs and head-to-head testing on prototype tether systems. At the Milestone B decision point, a team of judges will select a limited number of teams to pursue an accelerated Engineering Manufacturing and Development (EMD) phase. The EMD phase will last approximately three weeks, and will culminate in a follow-up evaluation and down-selection at Milestone C (regionals) where superior designs and top-performing prototypes will be awarded Limited Rate Initial Production (LRIP) contracts.

Trobotics, Inc. designed and built a space elevator for  the 2012 Warp XX season. Our product is called A.S.T.R.O.(Advanced Space Travel Robotic Operative). A.S.T.R.O. was designed to be simple, flexible, strategic, and reliable. Trobotics, Inc. believes these are the attributes of an effective and successful robot.
A.S.T.R.O was designed and built to successfully transport cargo into space and back to earth. During our work, we researched the history and events that lead up to the space elevator technology.

Outreach / Recruiting Event at ABS Back-to-School Orientation
Trobotics set up a booth at the ABS Back-to-School Orientation for recruiting and outreach purposes. In our booth, we displayed videos on one of our team laptops from the 2011 TVBEST competition. On another team laptop, we were able to let students look up our team website online. We made brochures about our team and about BEST to hand out to students, parents, faculty, and staff. We also let students drive last year’s robot to get them excited about helping us build a robot this season.

Co-hosted the SolidWorks Workshop at Calhoun Community College:
Athens Bible School Trobotics, NASWUG, and Dynetics co-hosted a SolidWorks Workshop on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Calhoun Community College. An invitation was sent by email to all TVBEST teams by our CEO / President, Andrew Stewart. We were able to help 15 students/mentors from five different teams learn more about SolidWorks to help them prepare for the 2012 TVBEST season.

Wal-mart Outreach / Fundraising Event:
We set up a booth at each entrance of Wal-mart in Athens, AL on September 22, 2012 for the purpose of promoting BEST Robotics in the community and to also raise some funds for our team by selling hexbugs. Not only did we have our hexbugs displayed so that people would want to buy them, we also passed out brochures about our team and BEST. We also set up a laptop at each entrance which played a video of our 2011 robot being driven at last year’s TVBEST competition. We were not able to take our actual robot for a demonstration this year like we did last year. So, we demonstrated our 2011 robot with the video. Visitors were able to see what it was like participating in a BEST competition by watching our video.

Trobotics Promotes TVBEST
Check out our advertisement on the large flatscreen TV in our school hallway to promote the upcoming TVBEST Robotics Competition on October 27, 2012 at Calhoun Community College.
Each week, we also add a science trivia question to the slide. The first student to turn in the correct answer wins a free snack! This slide will be displayed until after the 2012 TVBEST Game Day.

ABS Fall Festival Outreach / Fundraising Event
On October 12, 2012, Trobotics, Inc set up a booth at the ABS Annual Fall Festival. Trobotics, Inc. passed out brochures about our team and about BEST Robotics. We also displayed a Digital Photo Frame which played a slideshow of pictures of our team preparing for the 2012 Warp XX Competition. Another purpose of setting up a booth at the Fall Festival was to sell more hexbugs to raise money for our team. We gave free candy to those who purchased a hexbug from us. We had a lot of fun!

Invited all TVBEST teams to practice on our playing field
Trobotics, Inc’s marketing team handed out flyers inviting all the TVBEST teams to practice on their playing field for those who do not already have their own field. Our President, Andrew Stewart, also sent an email to all TVBEST teams to invite them to this event. Although we haven’t had anyone to sign up to use our field, we did offer.

We were on TV!
Trobotics Inc appeared on The Cooper and Company Show on Z-TV in Athens, AL. We thought appearing on TV would be a great way to inform the community about BEST Robotics.
